Nearly all the states that will have federally run health insurance exchanges will have Republican governors, citing unclear regulations or fear of economic woes from the exchanges.
Tea Party-backed group Americans For Prosperity heralded the 18 GOP governors who turned down the option to run their own health insurance exchanges as part of the health reform law, defaulting instead to a federally designed and operated exchange.
"It is encouraging to see governors taking this step to protect their residents and healthcare freedom in their states," AFP State Policy Manager Nicole Kaeding said in a news release.
Only five GOP governors endorsed state-run plans, most claiming they believed their state could run the operation more efficiently and preferred to limit federal influence in state operations. Utah Gov. Gary Herbert requested federal regulators approve an expanded form of his state's existing exchange, but regulators countered with a proposed federal-state partnership project.
