Montana Releases Exchange Insurance Rates

The premiums for the health plans that will be sold through the new Montana insurance exchange are on par with what residents could expect to pay without the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act's reforms, according to Montana Insurance Commissioner Monica Lindeen.

Ms. Lindeen has released the pricing details for the plans Blue Cross Blue Shield of Montana, PacificSource Health Plans and the Montana Health CO-OP will sell through the exchange. The cost of coverage for a 30-year-old consumer will range from about $200 to $300 per month.

The average monthly cost of individual health insurance coverage in the state was $191 in 2010, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Ms. Lindeen has credited the state's citizen protection laws with preventing industry abuses and keeping premiums from increasing under the PPACA, according to a news release.

Other states such as Rhode Island, Colorado and Maryland have also released pricing information for their insurance exchanges.
