Mississippi Hospitals Generate $11.9B Toward State Economy

During the economic recession, Mississippi hospitals contributed roughly $11.9 billion toward the state economy, according to a report from the Mississippi Hospital Association.


The total figure factored in payroll expenditures, non-payroll expenditures and capital expenditures. Overall, payrolls and benefits at Mississippi hospitals average $3.2 billion per year.

Other economic indicators from the report included the following:

•    Mississippi hospitals provide 60,143 full-time equivalent jobs, which is roughly 5.7 percent of total employment across the state.
•    Twenty-six hospitals employ more than 500 employees.
•    The average hospital employee salary is $42,193, which is above the Mississippi average of $33,185.
