Jackson Health System to Receive State Funding Similar to Last Year

The Miami-Dade County government approved a budget that leaves Miami-based Jackson Health System receiving similar state funds as last year, according to a Miami Herald report.

JHS officials thought they might lose up to $240 million in state funding, according to the report. JHS CEO Carlos Migoya thanked board members and county political leaders for their "passion for public health and ability to deliver for Miami-Dade County's residents."

In Florida Gov. Rick Scott's original budget proposal for 2012-2013, there would have been more than $2 billion in Medicaid cuts across the state, although those Medicaid cuts were reduced to roughly $300 million. Other funding arrangements and county reimbursements could result in "no significant reduction in Medicaid funding," Mr. Migoya said in the report.

JHS recently announced it would cut 1,115 jobs, saving $69 million annually. Mr. Migoya said he would donate his entire bonus to JHS' foundation if the layoff plan saves the health system money this year.
