Iowa has saved more than $23 million in cost avoidance or recoveries in the first year using a new Medicaid program integrity initiative, according to a news release.
The state used a variety of strategies to achieve savings, including ensuring the medical necessity of paid services, preventing "upcoding" of claims by providers and making sure Medicaid is reimbursed if another insurer pays for services that Medicaid covered.
Recoveries from analysis of paid claims accounted for approximately two-thirds of the state's Medicaid savings.
