Kuakini Medical Center in Honolulu has signed an efficiency services agreement with San Francisco-based energy financing company Metrus Energy.
Under the deal, Metrus will finance and implement $5.8 million in energy upgrades. These include a new central cooling and heating plan, new energy control systems and lighting upgrades.
Kuakini, a 212-bed hospital within Kuakini Health System, will pay Metrus based on energy savings once the project goes live. The energy updates, expected to be complete in September, are projected to save more than $1 million annually in electricity and natural gas savings.
"Metrus will handle the financial and technical aspects involved in making our hospital more energy-efficient and allow us to focus on what we do best: providing high-quality and safe patient care," Quin Ogawa, vice president of fiscal services and CFO of Kuakini Health System, said in a news release. "We are excited to kick off 2014 with this project, which enables us to improve the environmental health and sustainability of our hospital."
