Hospital spending intensified in the fourth quarter of 2011, jumping 3.5 percent from the third quarter, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's Quarterly Services Survey (pdf).
Total hospital revenue was $219.9 billion in the fourth quarter compared with $212.4 billion in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2010, hospital revenue totaled $212.3 billion.
Hospital spending in the fourth quarter was the highest it has been in the past year and a half and was the only quarter-over-quarter increase in 2011.
