HHS Gives States Extension for Health Insurance Exchanges

HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said she'll extend or waive the Jan. 1, 2013 deadline for states planning to operate their own health insurance exchanges to show they're prepared to comply with the federal health law, according to a report by the New York Times.

Extending the deadline allows federal regulators to work with states to operate their own exchanges, rather than shift responsibility to the federal government. HHS gave "conditional approval" to 17 states' exchange proposals.
