HHS and CMS have given final approval for Kansas' new Medicaid program design, which will go live Jan. 1, 2013.
In August, CMS accepted Kansas' section 1115 Medicaid waiver application, and HHS gave the final green light last week. Gov. Sam Brownback said in a news release the new Medicaid program, KanCare, is a "healthcare plan that is truly what Kansas wants and needs."
Three managed care companies — Amerigroup of Kansas, Sunflower State Health Plan and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan — will run the daily operations. Currently, the Kansas Medicaid program costs $2.9 billion per year and has 380,000 beneficiaries.
