Health Insurers Project Exchange Participation

When each state's health insurance exchange opens for enrollment late this year, health insurance companies have expressed interest in offering plans on some, but not all of them, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

Aetna, Humana, UnitedHealth Group and other major health insurers have projected to join in the range of 10 to 25 online marketplaces, although some believe as many as 100 exchanges will be offered since states may operate separate exchanges for individuals and small businesses. UnitedHealth said it may expand to "the majority" of state exchanges over time, according to the report.

Some insurance companies are cautious about the exchanges because individual and small business customers, who are the exchanges' target demographics, account for only a small portion of their revenue.

Other insurers, such as Indianapolis-based WellPoint and other nationwide Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans, have many more individual and small business customers and are enthusiastic about participating in the exchanges, which are expected to bring in as many as 13 million enrollees and $60 billion in 2014 premium revenue, according to the report. Local companies, Medicaid managed care insurers and customer-owned non-profit CO-OP plans are also likely to make a strong presence on the exchanges.
