Cook County Health System in Chicago Proposes $937.6M Budget

Cook County Health and Hospitals System, based in Chicago, has proposed a $937.6 million budget for the next fiscal year, which will likely draw scrutiny from Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle, according to a Chicago Sun-Times report.

As part of its spending plan, the county health system, which is expected to end this fiscal year with a $96 million budget shortfall, is asking for $327 million in a county subsidy, up from last year's county subsidy of $273.9 million. The other $610 million will come from revenues stemming from reimbursements and healthcare services provided through Stroger Hospital, health clinics and its new 24-hour urgent care center (formerly Oak Forest Hospital).

The health system's proposed budget must still receive approval from Ms. Preckwinkle, who must factor in the health system's budget into the county's larger $3.2 billion budget proposal for 2012. That larger multi-billion dollar proposal will come before a county board vote in the near future, according to the report.

Cook County Health's request comes after Ms. Preckwinkle already stated additional subsidies, given the county's financial standing, would not be possible. She also said her proposed county-wide budget would call for approximately $315 million in cuts, according to the report.
