Oak Forest (Ill.) Hospital, part of the Cook County Health and Hospitals System, completed its transition to an outpatient health center yesterday, following a months-long debate about the hospital's future, according to a report by WLS-TV.
The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved ending acute-care services at the hospital in August, following a nearly five-month struggle between the state health board and Cook County. Cook County sought approval from the board in March to end acute-care services as part of a larger plan to cut costs at the struggling public health system. The board initially rejected the move, but later approved it after more information was provided by the county.
The transition to immediate and primary care services is expected to save the health system millions, according to he report.
