CMS Reinforces ICD-10 Importance During Health IT Week

In roughly one year, Oct. 1, 2014, the U.S. healthcare system will finally make the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10, and CMS has created a new online ICD-10 implementation guide to help providers during the process.

CMS unveiled the new guide in lockstep with the third annual National Health IT Week. The new web-based tool provides a complete overview of ICD-10 as well as guidance on how small/medium physician practices, large physician practices, small hospitals and payers can transition to ICD-10. According to the tool's ICD-10 implementation timeline, most providers should be past the design and development stages and well into the testing stage.

CMS said the guide is a one-stop shop for any provider with questions on ICD-10 and includes links to other CMS ICD-10 resources.
