Cleveland Clinic's employee-related healthcare costs have been steadily declining ever since the health system implemented a series of wellness initiatives, according to a Cleveland Plain-Dealer report.
The health system's wellness efforts, spanning over several years, include a new hiring policy that excludes smokers; a healthy-food initiative; and removal of sugary drinks from its facilities. Cleveland Clinic also offers an on-site gym and fitness classes for employees.
Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove had been criticized for the measures, but proponents and health system officials tout the benefits of the wellness efforts. According to the report, some health system employees haven't paid a higher premium for healthcare in two years.
