BCBS of Delaware Surplus Now up to $181M

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Delaware earned $8 million in the first quarter of 2011, bringing its total surplus to $181 million, an increase of 48 percent since the end of 2008, according to a News Journal report.

Nationwide, Blue Cross plans have a surplus of $29 billion, compared to its $18 billion surplus at the end of 2008. This increase in surplus can be partly attributed to members foregoing medical services due to the economy.
