Current changes related to electronic health records, computer-assisted coding and ICD-10 provide an opportunity for healthcare leaders to improve coding workflows, according to an article published in the Journal of AHIMA.
The authors suggested these improvements can lead to greater efficiencies and cost savings.
The article offered five steps to reengineer the coding workflow:
1. Assess current workflow: map the process.
2. Outline the future state of coding: who, what and where.
3. Define the gaps and identify solutions.
4. Set realistic expectations and timelines.
5. Reengineer the process (and celebrate success).
