Health insurer Aetna recorded a positive third quarter compared with its more recent second quarter, as profit crept up 2 percent year-over-year.
For the three months ended Sept. 30, Aetna's profit totaled $499.2 million compared with $490.4 million. In the second quarter, Aetna's profit fell 14.7 percent despite an increase in membership.
Aetna's revenue increased 6 percent in the third quarter, from $8.4 billion in 2011 to $8.9 billion this year. For the first nine months of fiscal year 2012, Aetna's profit was down 9 percent, totaling $1.47 billion. Aetna's revenue increased 5.8 percent in the first nine months of 2012, from $25.2 billion to $26.7 billion
