Advisory Panel on Hospital Outpatient Payment to Meet in February

The newly renamed Advisory Panel on Hospital Outpatient Payment, the group which advises CMS on hospital outpatient payments, will meet Feb. 27-29, 2012, to review payment issues as well as supervision requirements for hospital outpatient services, according to an AHA News Now report.

The final rule for the 2012 Outpatient Prospective Payment System called for CMS to seek recommendations from the Ambulatory Payment Classification Advisory Panel about appropriate supervision requirements for outpatient hospital thereapuetic services. The proposed version of the rule would have required direct physician supervision of these services, but some voiced concerns this would limit access for benefeciaries, especially at rural hospitals.

Comments to the panel on changing supervision levels for individual therapeutic services will be accepted until Dec. 30.
