9 Statistics on Hospital Returns on Investable Assets

Hospitals and health systems reported an average return on investable assets of 10.9 percent in fiscal year 2010 — a considerable drop from 2009, but still much improved from the economic debacle of 2008, according to a study from the Commonfund Institute.


The Commonfund Institute analyzed investment and financial data of 90 non-profit hospitals and health systems. Here are nine statistics on the average annual total net returns on investable assets for healthcare organizations over the past several years.

FY 2002: -4.9 percent
FY 2003: 14.1 percent
FY 2004: 8.2 percent
FY 2005: 6.3 percent
FY 2006: 10.6 percent
FY 2007: 8 percent
FY 2008: -21.2 percent
FY 2009: 18.8 percent
FY 2010: 10.9 percent
