The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology is calling on lawmakers to support a $12 million increase in the fiscal year 2013 budget for the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network.
Healthcare facilities required to report data on healthcare-associated infections submit that information to the NHSN, a secure, internet-based surveillance system. The system is intended to make data on patient safety and adverse events standard and consistent at the federal level.
According to APIC, the CDC will need additional funding to keep up with the growing number of facilities reporting to the NHSN. There were 3,000 facilities reporting to the system in 2010, and that number is expected to grow to 16,500 in 2013. APIC argues the additional $12 million in funding would help CDC modernize NSHN technology as the number of reporting facilities continues to expand.
