Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has signed a bill that would require healthcare facilities to report infection rates to the state's Department of Health, according to a Herald Journal news report.
The legislation, which was sponsored by Rep. Jack R. Draxler (R-Logan), requires hospitals, outpatient surgical facilities and dialysis centers to report data on bacterial, viral or fungal infections acquired by patients to the state Department of Health. The department, in turn, will receive $100,000 annually to collect, publish and update the data annually.
Rep. Draxler said he expects the state health department to publish the first infection report in January 2013.
