The American Hospital Association announced James J. Bleicher, MD, president and CEO of Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood, Ariz., as the winner of the 2012 Shirley Ann Munroe Leadership Award, which recognizes small or rural hospital leaders who have improved healthcare delivery through innovative and progressive efforts.
Dr. Bleicher led VVMC in collaborations with community physicians, school districts and a large academic center to improve access and share research, according to the release. Dr. Bleicher also teamed with The University of Arizona Cancer Center and adopted telemedicine and other technologies to increase access to underserved populations.
AHA also announced three finalists:
• Bryan Slaba, CEO of Wagner (S.D.) Community Memorial Hospital-Avera.
• Harold Krueger Jr., CEO of Chadron (Neb.) Community Hospital & Healthcare Services.
• Dennis Franks, CEO of Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute, Kan.
