Philadelphia officials have named five hospitals, two healthcare facilities and one day care as potential exposure sites to a measles outbreak.
The health department first announced the outbreak Jan. 4 with five confirmed cases and three probable ones. As of Jan. 8, all eight cases are confirmed as measles. Delaware has issued a similar warning about a potential outbreak.
At least 93% of children in the city are vaccinated against measles, but the department is working to contact people who faced exposure at these locations:
- Children's Hospital of Philadelphia on Dec. 28 and Jan. 1
- Holy Redeemer Pediatric Urgent Care Meadowbrook on Jan. 3 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
- Jefferson Abington Hospital, emergency department on Jan. 3 from 7:15 p.m. to 9:45 p.m.
- Jefferson Health's 33 S. 9th St. rehabilitation center on Dec. 19
- Multicultural Education Station Day Care on Dec. 20 and Dec. 21
- Nazareth Hospital, emergency department on Dec. 31 and Jan. 2
- Nemours Hospital on Dec. 29
- St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, emergency department on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31
- St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, inpatient unit 5 north from Dec. 31 to Jan. 3
Officials think the outbreak began after an infant who was too young to be vaccinated was taken out of the U.S. for travel. Upon return, the infant was hospitalized with a case that then spread to other patients. One hospitalized child was sent home but still had symptoms, officials said, thus exposing others in a day care.
