The New Mexico Department of Health is reporting another case of Hantavirus, the state's sixth case since 2023 began, as well as a second death from the virus.
The onset of the zoonotic disease that is commonly found in and spread from infected rodents, can begin with symptoms that feel like the flu or a stomach bug, and then progress to a more severe state.
Outside of the two deaths, all four of the surviving individuals who have contracted Hantavirus in New Mexico have required hospitalization, intensive care and oxygen therapy before being sent home, according to the health department's June 21 news release.
New Mexico and Colorado account for the most infections across the country, according to the CDC.
New Mexico last reported a case April 13.
