Hackensack Meridian Health awarded $477K in grants for medical research, community health projects

The New Jersey Health Foundation awarded Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health almost $477,000 in grants, according to an April 3 HMH press release. The grants will be used to support research efforts and community health projects throughout New Jersey.

Ihor Sawczuk, MD, president of academics, research and innovation for HMH, said the funds will support research into genetics, cancer, autism and tuberculosis. Community projects will focus on health literacy, contraception counseling, mobile health and homeless children.

"This is a major boost to a variety of projects and research. It strengthens so many facets of what we're doing, from laboratory science to directly helping people in need," said Dr. Sawczuk, who is also the founding chair of the HMH Research Institute.

Faculty members of the HMH School of Medicine will receive 11 of the 16 grants.

Jeffrey Boscamp, MD, dean of HMHSOM, said, "The New Jersey Health Foundation, with this exceptional support, is putting a down payment on our collective future."
