The CDC is reporting a steep increase in pertussis cases this year, according to ABC News.
As of May 25, the CDC has confirmed 4,864 whooping cough cases this year among U.S. residents. This tally is up nearly threefold from the 1,746 cases reported in 2023.
This trend reflects a global increase in pertussis cases and mirrors figures seen prior to the pandemic.
"Although these numbers are up significantly from last year, these numbers are more similar to what we saw before the COVID-19 pandemic and, historically, we do see increases in cases on a cycle of every three to five years," Felicia Scaggs Huang, MD, medical director of infection prevention and control at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, told ABC News.
