OB/GYN leader joins ranks to tackle national opioid problem

Mark DeFrancesco, MD, president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a group of healthcare leaders met earlier this month with Vice Admiral Vivek Murthy MD, the U.S. Surgeon General, to outline a plan of attack to address opioid abuse and overdosing.

Dr. DeFrancesco has been president of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists since May. He also serves as a board member of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care and previously led AAAHC as president from 2009 to 2010.

"I would like to thank Dr. Murthy for inviting me to participate in this very important initiative, and for his transparent and welcoming approach to collaboration with the health care community," Dr. DeFrancesco said, according to a statement. "Together, physician and government leaders can make great strides in improving public health."
