It's National Diabetes Month — Which 10 states have the highest diabetes rates?

Diabetes is one of the leading public health concerns in the United States and the focus of President Barack Obama's yearly proclamation to declare November National Diabetes Awareness Month.

In this year's proclamation, President Obama noted that one in 11 Americans is diagnosed with the condition, and the number of young adults with type 2 diabetes is on the rise.

In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, MD Magazine ranked the 10 states with the highest rates of diabetes using their adult diabetes rates, prediabetes rates, five-year increase in incidence and diabetes deaths. They are listed below, from highest to lowest:

1. Alabama

2. Mississippi

3. South Carolina

4. West Virginia

5. Tennessee

6. Texas

7. Louisiana

8. Arkansas

9. North Carolina

10. Georgia
