Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia launched a new outreach program recently to teach residents of neighborhoods with high crime rates how to provide basic first-aid to gunshot victims, according to a local WPVI-TV report.
This type of knowledge can really come in handy to residents of Philadelphia, where 236 of last year's 280 homicides were from shootings.
The program, called "FIGHTING CHANCE," was designed by TUH Trauma Outreach Coordinator Scott Charles, and Assistant Director of Emergency Medical Services at TUH Tim Bryan, DO. It involves a two-hour, hands-on education course, and mock scenarios, taught by Temple physicians, nurses and staff.
Thus far, hospital officials estimate the program has trained 80 local residents and they have no intention of slowing down, they told WPVI-TI.
