HHS appointed a group of national experts to the Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee, which was established by the 21st Century Cures Act.
The committee is tasked with improving federal coordination efforts that address mental health in adults and children. Individuals with serious emotional disturbances often lack access to evidence-based treatment and support, experiencing higher rates of suicide, unemployment, homelessness, criminal justice involvement and other negative outcomes.
Senior leaders from 10 federal agencies, including the departments of Justice, Labor, Veterans Affairs, Defense, Housing and Urban Development, Education, Labor and the Social Security Administration, were selected to serve three-year terms, along with 14 other non-federal public members selected to serve on the committee.
