Georgia continues to lag in maternal, infant health

Georgia ranks below other states in terms of premature births, underweight babies and infant mortality, a report from the Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Georgia found.

The 2016 State of the State of Maternal & Infant Health in Georgia reports Georgia ranks 43rd, 47th and 45th nationally for premature births, underweight babies and infant mortality, respectively.

Here are four report findings.

1. Nationally, Georgia has the highest rate of insufficient prenatal care birth certificate data, with 16 percent missing.

2. While 50.5 percent of pregnant women nationally receive flu vaccines, only 17 percent of pregnant women in Georgia do.

3. Forty-six of the state's 159 counties house labor and delivery units, with 77 total birthing hospitals in Georgia.

4. In 2012, about half (80) of Georgia's 159 counties did not have a practicing OB-GYN.
