A report from the CDC shows 27.5 percent of adults over age 50 did not exercise outside of work in 2014.
It showed inactivity increased with age, so that 25.4 percent of adults 50 to 64 years old reported no exercise outside of work-related activities, compared to 26.9 percent of those ages 65 to 74 and 35.3 percent of adults over 75 years old.
The report also indicates women tend to be more sedentary than men. Inactivity is also more prevalent among Hispanic and black people, and among those with one or more chronic diseases.
Inactivity was also associated with decreasing levels of education and higher body mass index, according to the CDC.
The CDC recommends communities support physical activity by making streets safe and accessible for people with physical limitations, and by locating residential areas near commercial destinations. "Creating or enhancing access to places for physical activity, combined with information to promote and encourage use of these places, is another recommended strategy to increase physical activity," the CDC report reads.
