Ischemic heart disease was the leading cause of death and premature mortality from 1990 to 2016, according to a study published in JAMA.
The researchers, called the U.S. Burden of Disease Collaborators, completed the study as part of the Global Burden of Disease analysis, which is conducted annually.
The study authors examined published literature for 333 causes and 84 risk factors linked to mortality from 1990 through 2016.
Here are the top five causes of death from 1990 to 2016. The study found the top risk factors contributing to these conditions included poor diets, obesity, diabetes, tobacco use, lack of exercise and alcohol use.
1. Ischemic heart disease
2. Lung, tracheal or bronchial cancer
3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
4. Alzheimer's disease and other dementias
