Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts is committing a total of $16 million to address health barriers and inequities, the payer said Nov. 9.
According to the announcement, the funds will be provided over the next five years, with $10.6 million as direct contributions and $5.5 million as pro bono support to nonprofit organizations.
The approach plans to target food, environment and racial justice as social determinants of health.
"The pandemic has deepened our understanding of the systemic inequities that have devastating consequences on health outcomes," said Andrew Dreyfus, president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. "Together, with our community partners and civic leaders, we strive to create an environment that makes good health attainable for everyone."
