Support grows for expanding pharmacist scopes

Compared to a year prior, more pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners agree that pharmacists should have more primary care duties, according to a survey conducted by Surescripts.

Only 36% of pharmacists think their current job allows them to offer patients all the care they need, the survey found. The push for expanded pharmacist scopes of practice has been a yearslong effort, and it seems as though more healthcare workers are on board.

In 2023, 65% of pharmacists and 26% of other clinicians agreed with the statement: "We should allow pharmacists to take on more primary care duties like performing point-of-care testing and diagnostics, managing medications used to treat chronic conditions, and prescribing medications for certain conditions."

A year later, those figures increased to 75% and 29%, respectively. The health information company surveyed the clinicians in April and May, and results were released July 23.
