India is reportedly considering lifting the export restrictions it placed on active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished drug products last week, according to the Economic Times.
The Indian government sent a notice March 3 that it is halting exports of 13 active pharmaceutical ingredients and 13 finished drug products due to concerns about the coronavirus outbreak causing shortages.
The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, which represents India's largest drugmakers, and the Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association wrote to the government asking to withdraw the restriction, saying the country has a "surplus to meet global demand" for the ingredients and finished drug products and that the restriction hurts the country's image.
At a meeting March 9, drugmakers reportedly assured the government that they have enough supplies to last until at least May, the Economic Times reported.
The drug industry added that if any unexpected shortages occur, they'll agree to restrict exports again.
