How Michigan Medicine is addressing pharmacy deserts

Ann Arbor-based Michigan Medicine is bolstering staff at five of its outpatient pharmacies as Rite Aid closes all its stores in the state, according to an Aug. 25 report from MLive

The pharmacies are located in Lansing, Carson City and Saint Johns.

The move comes after Rite Aid announced it would be closing all 186 locations in Michigan by the end of September due to the company's 2023 bankruptcy filing, according to an Aug. 14 report from the Detroit Free Press

The health system said each pharmacy would be hiring five additional staff members and implementing changes to the technology and physical layout of the pharmacies. The health system also opened a pharmacy at University of Michigan Health West Hospital in Wyoming, Mich., according to the MLive report.
