Commercial health plan clients interested in point-of-sale rebates, OptumRx CEO says

John Prince, the CEO of pharmacy benefit manager OptumRx, said the company has received a lot of interest from commercial clients in transitioning to point-of-sale rebates, according to Inside Health Policy.

While the transition to point-of-sale rebates is well underway at Optum's parent company, UnitedHealth, the PBM's client health plans also are interested in moving toward contracts where rebates are passed to health plan beneficiaries at the pharmacy counter, Mr. Prince said.

"I'd say, when you look at the health plan market in addition to UnitedHealthcare, we've had strong interest with our other 45 health plans, where a lot of them are actually looking at how they would incorporate that," Mr. Prince said on an earnings call, according to Inside Health Policy.

The point-of-sale rebate models were proposed by the Trump administration for Medicare Part D and Medicaid managed care plans. Several lawmakers have proposed expanding these point-of-sale rebates to the commercial market.
