ASHP releases toolkit to protect pharmacy residency programs

For about five years, federal auditors have enforced confusing requirements for residency programs, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, which released a toolkit April 18 to safeguard these programs.

The organization has seen a rise in audits on postgraduate year 1 programs, and threats to funding from CMS have subsequently grown, according to ASHP CEO, Paul Abramowitz, PharmD, Sc.D.

"Auditors for the Medicare program have claimed that some standard hospital business and training practices are noncompliant, despite a lack of clear guidance from the agency," Dr. Abramowitz said in a statement.

CMS has not met ASHP's expectations, he said, and as the organization continues to advocate for clearer guidelines, it published a toolkit that outlines best practices for PGY1 funding and CMS audits. Access it here.
