AbbVie said it will donate more than $1 million worth of its drug, Aluvia, to China to help combat the coronavirus outbreak, Endpoints News reported.
China's National Health Commission has said that Aluvia, which is designed to treat HIV, is a possible treatment for the symptoms of the coronavirus. Aluvia works by blocking an enzyme that the coronavirus needs to reproduce.
One coronavirus patient told China's Time-Weekly that Aluvia seemed to be effective for him, according to Endpoints News.
Aluvia has previously been tested in patients with SARS and MERS, other types of coronaviruses.
However, Aluvia is hard to get in China, a Wuhan physician told Time-Weekly.
In response, AbbVie said it will donate $1.44 million worth of the pills, but didn't specify how it would distribute them, Endpoints News reported.
