A snapshot of the pharmacist job market

More than 6,500 pharmacist jobs were posted in July, according to JobRx's monthly report.

Six other statistics on the pharmacy jobs market:

  1. In July, 21,964 pharmacy jobs were posted, with 6,558 of those job postings being for pharmacist positions.

  2. The states with the highest number of pharmacist job postings in July were California (550), Texas (511), Florida (422) and Pennsylvania (340).

  3. Pharmacists' annual median pay was $128,710 in 2020, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

  4. Outpatient care centers were the highest-paying employers for pharmacists in 2020, with the median annual salary for pharmacists who worked in these locations being $147,130.

  5. In 2020, the highest share of pharmacists (135,070) were employed at health and personal care retail locations. The second highest share (78,940) were employed at hospitals and surgery centers, and 25,490 pharmacists were employed at grocery store pharmacy chains.

  6. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that pharmacist employment will decline 3 percent from 2019 to 2029.
