The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has released data showing the number of emergency department visits related to synthetic marijuana more than doubled between 2010 and 2011, the latest years for which data is available.
Nationwide, visits rose from about 11,500 in 2010 to more than 28,500 in 2011. This is about 2.4 percent of total ED visits related to illicit drugs in 2011, which were approximately 1.2 million. Males accounted for about 80 percent of the visits related to synthetic cannabinoids, according to the report.
