The University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor is set to build a $7 million emergency department-based hub for research and training of practitioners in emergency medicine and critical care within its adult emergency services department.
The hub, the Emergency Critical Care Center or EC3, will be among the first facilities of its kind in the United States when it opens in spring 2015, according to a news release.
The design of the facility is meant to meet UMHS' growing demand for emergency care while reducing the strain on inpatient admissions.
The research component of EC3 will include a partnership with the Michigan Center for Integrative Research in Critical Care, which will delve into the connections between emergency and intensive care.
Finally, EC3 will host fellowships in critical care for young emergency medicine physicians who want to learn more about the discipline.
