Worcester-based UMass Memorial Medical Center revealed plans to discontinue outpatient psychiatry and outpatient physical therapy services at several of its health centers in Worcester, according to MassLive.
UMass Memorial officials said they plan to submit a formal notice to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to discontinue those services, according to the report. The services are scheduled to end in January 2019.
A hospital spokesperson told MassLive the outpatient psychiatry department and physical therapy services have struggled with declining patient volumes and that the select locations are not well suited for these types of services.
"These difficult organizational moves are precipitated by ongoing market, financial and operational pressures on our healthcare system and medical center that challenge our ability to meet the healthcare needs of the region in a high quality, affordable and efficient manner," the spokesperson said in a prepared statement.
The service closures come as Worcester-based UMass Memorial Health Care lost roughly $22 million year-to-date on operations, which the spokesperson attributed mostly to lower Medicaid reimbursements, the report states.
