Toaster oven starts fire at New Jersey hospital, forces six patient transfers

Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel, N.J., part of Edison, N.J.-based Hackensack Meridian Health, transferred patients to a nearby hospital after a fire began at the facility, according to the Asbury Park Press.

Hospital officials told the publication six patients were transferred to Red Bank, N.J.-based Riverview Medical Center, also part of Hackensack Meridian, after the fire began in a toaster oven inside the intensive care unit break room.

"While the fire damage was very limited, water from the sprinkler system damaged certain areas of the hospital," a Bayshore spokesperson said in a statement to the Asbury Park Press Feb. 25. "As a result, several patients were relocated to different parts of the hospital and six patients were transferred to Riverview Medical Center. Clean up is underway and we expect normal operations very soon."

The fire did not harm patients or employees, and a damage estimate was not yet known as of Feb. 25.
