Akron, Ohio-based Summa Health plans to make a significant multimillion-dollar investment to expand and enhance services currently offered on its Summa Barberton (Ohio) Hospital campus.
Here are six things to know about the planned investment.
1. The investment, part of Summa Health's vision for population health management, will impact both inpatient and outpatient services offered within the Barberton community.
2. With the investment, the SBH campus will feature a significant presence in the areas of women's health, cardiac, oncology, orthopedic and expanded outpatient services.
3. Additional details about the investment will be shared in the next several months with the unveiling of Summa Health's facility plan, which includes a significant multi-million dollar investment in both inpatient and outpatient services as well as renovations of the surgical suites on the SBH campus.
4. In addition to this planned investment, Summa Health also continues to invest more than $10 million in the facility for other projects, such as the EMR implementation and the purchase of new IV pumps. Summa also is in the process of recruiting a general orthopedic surgeon, with an anticipated 300 additional patients receiving services at the hospital.
5. As Summa Health works to transform its population health management, it has also reviewed all facilities "to ensure that the services provided match the needs of the community in which they are offered," Jason Niehaus, site administrator for SBH, said in a news release. As a result, Summa Health will transition the inpatient Behavioral Health Unit from SBH to Summa Health System St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, effective Oct. 1. In addition, open heart procedures will transition from SBH to Summa Health System Akron City Hospital in the near future.
6. The decision to transition services to other facilities affects approximately 20 employees, all of whom are expected to have other opportunities for employment within Summa Health.
