Different strategies for improving emergency department patient flow at six hospitals cost up to 1,017 hours and $490,000, according to a Journal of Emergency Nursing study.
Researchers conducted interviews of patient flow improvement teams at six Urgent Matters hospitals — hospitals that are part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded initiative "Urgent Matters" to improve patient flow. Eight different strategies were studied.
The time spent on each strategy ranged from fewer than two days to roughly 42 days. Only three strategies required "sizable expenditures," ranging from $32,850 to $490,000, according to the study. Construction and the addition of new staff were the most costly elements of the strategies.
