Power outage forces Texas hospital to cancel nonemergent surgeries

St. David's South Austin (Texas) Medical Center cancelled and rescheduled all nonemergency surgeries May 3 due to a power outage, reports the American-Statesman.

The loss of power occurred around 9 a.m. when an electrical panel board malfunctioned.  Electricians were called to the scene to restore power.

The hospital promptly engaged backup generators to ensure staff could continue to provide quality care. However, out of an abundance of caution, nonemergent surgeries were rescheduled.

"The hospital has generators to provide an alternative source of power, and the safety of our patients was not compromised at any time," the medical center's CEO Todd Steward said in a statement to the American-Statesman.
