A 64-year-old man shot and killed himself at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., on Jan. 22, according to TV station WJLA, which cited a police report.
Police responded to the hospital after receiving a report of a man with a gun in the hospital's heart and vascular center. Before arriving at the hospital, officers received a call reporting a shot fired, according to the report.
Officers found the man in his hospital room with a gunshot wound. The patient was conscious and refused commands to put down his weapon, according to police.
Police detained the man about an hour after they arrived. The patient was taken to the emergency room for treatment, but he later died from his injuries.
It's unclear where the patient obtained the gun and why he was wielding it, according to The Washington Post.
