The new University of Iowa Health Care-Iowa River Landing facility, set to open Oct. 8, has several features designed to improve patient flow, according to a Press-Citizen report.
The facility was built to provide additional patient capacity, as the main campus — UI Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City — continues to see increased patient volume. IRL Executive Medical Director Rami Boutros estimates IRL will take on 175,000 patient visits from UI Hospitals and Clinics in its first year, according to the report.
To promote communication between physicians and staff and reduce hallway crowding, the new location will connect exam rooms to a room of computers and central screens via a rear door. Patients will enter through the front door.
The computers will allow physicians to track how far the patients are in completing their questionnaire in the waiting room, and will provide physicians with the patient's description and photo, enabling the physician to quickly identify the patient.
